Microphones also allowed singers to not have to project their voices like trained opera singers in order to be recorded! The first era of electrical recording coincided with the rise in country music, hot jazz and blues - all music which we think of being stereotypically 1920s. That music is represented in this playlist, and as you can see, Columbia (unlike Victor or Edison) used many dime-store and subsidiary variants on their labels.
