This time around we were very lucky to see him just outside Satara Camp in the Kruger National Park while on a wildlife photographic safari with guests. We have been seeing him around this area for a couple of years but always amazing to get close to this white lion as there is only 3 in The Kruger Park and adjacent game reserve. The white lion is a rare colour mutation of the lion, specifically the Southern African lion. White lions in the area of Timbavati are thought to have been indigenous to the Timbavati region of South Africa for centuries, although the earliest recorded sighting in this region was in 1938. White lions are a rare colour mutation of the African lion. They are not albino; they are leucistic, which is lack of dark pigmentation. They get their colouring from a recessive gene known as a colour inhibitor. To produce a white lion, both parents must possess the recessive gene. Many visitors have nicknamed him "Casper" and it looks like the name has stuck and there are many guests that really want to see this magnificent animal in the wild. Here are previous videos of him.
