The composer of the famous Charleston, which appeared in the Broadway show Runnin' wild (1923). He formed a bridge between ragtime and jazz, and was a master of the "Harlem stride piano" style, with the jumping left hand. He was a great example for Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and Art Tatum. Fats Waller had lessons from him. James P. Johnson has played hundreds of piano rolls under his own name. He also recorded 78rpm records. James P.
