An Alternate Night Music
17 videos • 112 views • by Christopher Pazdernik An alternate playlist for 'A Little Night Music' featuring cut songs, rewrites & cover versions! 1) "Numbers" - Stephen Sondheim introduces the first incarnation of the opening--and the first song he wrote for the show!--with Fredrika practicing on the spinet, singing to herself, and only introducing the characters, but also their ages! It was cut when the show dropped the notion of seeing everything through Fredrika's eyes. 2) "Now" - solo piano cover by Terry Trotter 3) "Later" - cover by tenor Marc Heller 4) "Soon" - instrumental cover by Herb Geller Quartet 5) "The Glamorous Life" - alternate version written for the movie from Fredrika's point of view 6) "Recordes" - "Remember" from the 2001 Barcelona Cast Recording 7) "Have You Met My Wife" - cover of "You Must Meet My Wife" by Benny Goodman (title later corrected!) 8) "Liaisons" - cover version by Mandy Patinkin 9) "Bang!" – Carl-Magnus (replaced by "In Praise of Women") Sondheim originally envisioned Carl-Manus would undo a button on each Bang! 10) "My Husband the Pig" – Charlotte (cut after the first rehearsal; one section was later expanded and turned into "Every Day a Little Death." 11) "Every Day a Little Death" - film version with extra chorus for Charlotte to sing in her carriage on the way to visit Anne. 12) "A Weekend in the Country" - film version which was shortened, necessitating writing two choruses in the last third of the song. 13) "Two Fairy Tales" – Henrik and Anne (cut in rehearsals because it interrupted the flow of the story) 14) Send in the Clowns - cover version by Barbra Steisand featuring an added verse Sondheim wrote to bridge the gap where there is dialogue in the show 15) "Silly People" – Frid (cut in Boston because the audience neither knew nor cared about who Frid was and it impeded the flow of the story.) 16) "The Miller's Son" - cover version from Losing My Mind: A Sondheim Disco Fever Dream 17) "Love Takes Time" - lyrics written for Night Waltz in the movie version. Sondheim said he was finally able to utilize the idea from "Numbers" of introducing all the characters. As you can see, the playlist is bookended with the first and last pieces he wrote for the property!
