Based on the Marvel Comics superhero team Guardians of the Galaxy, the game is set in an original universe. In the game, the titular team, while attempting to capture a beast for a wealthy collector, accidentally unleashes a seemingly harmless being, inadvertently setting in motion a series of catastrophic events that threaten the peace of the universe. The player assumes control of Peter Quill / Star-Lord, the team's self-proclaimed leader, though they can also issue commands to other members of the Guardians including Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon and Groot.
