Swift Africa: Weekly Pan African Playlist I 28/02/23

21 videos • 74 views • by Pan African Television Theme: In the aftermath of Nigeria’s elections we look at music that seeks to expose the injustices experienced by the people. Asa’s ‘Fire on the Mountain’ speaks directly to the conscience of those in power; while ‘This is Nigeria’ references the #EndSARS protests. Burna Boy’s Common Person shows how each person has a role to play - from those who clean the house to the person who works in a shop; and Seun Kuti’s ‘Rise’ condemns multinational companies like Monsanto and calls us to rise up.   As 2 March marks Morocco’s Independence Day, rapper dizzy DROS’ new song is critical of the Moroccan government and sheds light on current social and economic issues; while Aziza Brahim’s ‘Sahari’ gives hope to the people of Western Sahara in their just struggle for liberation and freedom.  In the ‘feel-good’ section we share newly released songs from the continent.  For this week’s throwback, we celebrate Pan African music icon Miriam Makeba from South Africa - who would have celebrated her birthday on 4 March - through songs like ‘A luta Continua’, ‘Soweto Blues’ and ‘Pata Pata’.
