Mass Murder in Palestine

Below are a few words from the organisers: After seeing events in Palestine over the last few weeks, we're sickened by the starvation of the population of Gaza, and we want to know what Tower Hamlets council is doing to support the people of Palestine. Of course, the Gaza strip is far away, and it's not something that Tower Hamlets council could solve, like giving us decent youth facilities. But the council could do something which would cost it nothing: It could twin the borough with the town of Jenin and fly the Palestinian flag over the town hall. If it performed that one act of solidarity with people who are under siege, it would have massive support throughout the borough. Last Saturday (2nd Feb 2008), we organised a meeting about Gaza and that was the overwhelming feeling from the people attending. Over 135 people, almost all from nearby estates and mostly young, heard George Galloway MP and Councillor Abjol Miah from Respect, and Dr Dawood Abdullah, Deputy General Secretary of the Muslim Council of Britain talk about the 350,000 Palestinians who broke through the wall into Egypt last week. Gaza is under siege from Israel. Food aid has been completely stopped and the people of Palestine are being deliberately starved. Our government supports what Israel is doing. It's often claimed that young people are apathetic. But when we organised the meeting (along with The Light, a new magazine for young Muslims), we were bowled over by just how passionate young people in Tower Hamlets are about Palestine. We're organising a delegation to Gaza to give our support, and we'll be organising more meetings in the borough. We're encouraging people to give money through Muslim Aid and Interpal to help ease the Palestinian people's suffering. But we need the council to hear what young people in Tower Hamlets are saying: Twin with Jenin, and support the people of Palestine. Tower Hamlets Respect Youth
