Southern Nevada is home to several species of waterfowl, including mallards like these. Although they frequently find refuge at the Springs Preserve’s Cienega, they can also be found in urban areas away from water sources, especially when they have their young. Follow these tips from the Nevada Department of Wildlife to help our waterfowl neighbors:
🦆 Be vigilant when driving in areas where you know waterfowl may congregate.
🦆 Leave nests and young wildlife alone. Young wildlife’s best chance for survival is with their parents, never remove them.
🦆 Never feed ducks and geese bread, it is extremely harmful to them and can cause an irreversible condition called ‘Angel Wing’ which can render them flightless.
🦆 Remember, wildlife knows what they are doing and will stay in an area if it has the right habitat for them. Though we may question their choices, leave it to them to find their way!

The Springs Preserve is a 180-acre cultural institution designed to commemorate Las Vegas dynamic history and to provide a vision for a sustainable future. The Preserve features museums, galleries, outdoor concerts and events, colorful botanical gardens and an interpretive trail system that meanders through a scenic wetland habitat.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978, the Preserve is located approximately 3 miles west of downtown Las Vegas. The Preserve is known as the birthplace of Las Vegas and represents one of the richest and most unique cultural and biological resources in Southern Nevada.
