Kala Bhavan of Calgary was founded in 1987 under the direction of Roma Thakore, and is focused on promoting performing arts in Calgary. We focus on teaching traditional Bharatnatyam and folk dances of India, along with fusion & Indian contemporary.
Under the lead of the artistic director and senior choreographers, Kala Bhavan’s items are often influenced by other dance styles while still maintaining traditional elements, providing their dancers with a strong foundation. At Kala Bhavan, dance is a form of self expression and it is this passion that allows Kala Bhavan to provide a range of classical, semi-classical, folk and fusion items.
Kala Bhavan students have won several awards in dance competitions and promote the art of dance in Calgary. They have performed throughout the city for various organizations and events such as Heritage Day, Canada Day, Zoo Gala, GlobalFest and the annual Partnership Walk.
