You’ve seen it your whole life. On your parents, relatives, friends, and even yourself. Your weight is normal, you look thin in clothes, but when the shirt comes off, or when wearing a sari…

This body type in recent times has been named Skinny-Fat. When your legs, arms and face are skinny, but around your midsection… extra fat. Many people from all over the world and from every ethnicity exhibit it. However, it is nearly universal in only one population, South Asians.

Why?

Epigenetic adaptations to famines which happened in South Asia for thousands of years due to the seasonal monsoon sometimes failing resulting in less food from the farming that depends on it. This weather pattern has been around for at least 5000 years and ancient South Asian skeletons have been surveyed as old as 11,000 showing we had lower lean mass(muscle) compared to other populations from similar time periods. This means we were (more) frequently born into environments with less calories and protein availability, resulting in lower birth weights as well as less muscle and more fat. (Pomeroy et al. 2019)

(2/2) This would not be a problem in pre-industrial society (before we had processed food), but when you combine our famine adaptions with our modern diet that is higher in calories and processed food designed to make us overeat, it makes South Asians even more susceptible to obesity and health problems than others.

Luckily these fat storage patterns are reversible by increasing protein consumption and having a healthy body composition, but only in the next generation. The best you can do now is follow a strategy specifically made for us to lose stubborn fat and build muscle without gaining extra fat so you can finally get the body and health you want.

Will cover this the next post!
