I play with sound and ideas, and the systems that create them, as what some call a composer, arranger, or pianist.
Boundary-pushing musical experiments, studying composition at Northwestern University and Mills College, playing keyboard for Black congregations in the Chicago area, becoming familiar with Black worship traditions, and the context of centering Blackness/marginalized perspectives/transformative faith, against white supremacy, led me to musically revisit our various parts of our culture, (from faith, to holidays, to the Super Bowl.)
Now based in Oakland, CA, I am a musical deconstruction worker. Some of my work is avant-gospel “dialogues” with Black spirituals, a tradition I cannot claim, but strive to be accountable and respond authentically to.
In March, 2020, I began a series of daily improvised keyboard livestreams. They became a set of #1000improvisations, completed in 2023.
