The Supreme Court has ordered the creation of a national task force to look into doctors’ safety at the workplace.
Court said National Task Force shall make actions plans on two heads, preventing violence including gender based violence against medical professionals, providing an enforceable national protocol for dignified and safe working conditions for interns, residents, senior residents, doctors etc.
The Court took suo motu cognisance of the Aug 8 rape and murder of a resident doctor at RG Kar Hospital, Kolkata.
Supreme court: What was the principal doing? FIR was not filed and the body was handed over late to parents. What were the police doing? A serious offence has taken place in the hospital. What are they doing? Allowing vandals to enter the hospital?
The Supreme Court also noted that this is "a systemic issue" and not just one case alone.
FYI: The Union Health Ministry, in a recent notice, has urged government hospitals and institutes to increase security in their premises.

Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the Paris Olympics after she weighed 100g above the 50kg weight class on the morning of her gold medal bout.
The athletes must stay within their weight categories during both days of the competition, even if Phogat made the weight limit for yesterday's two matches.
Indian Olympic Association:
Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, Phogat weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you to respect Vinesh’s privacy. According to news reports, Team India is likely to protest the decision today. Phogat will not receive a single medal if the disqualification stays. The 50kg category will likely only have gold and bronze medal winners.
Phogat stunned World No:1 and the almost unbeatable Yui Susaki in the 50kg wrestling qualifiers yesterday, rapidly moving to the quarter and semifinals, assuring at least a silver for India.
Just a year ago, Phogat's prospects looked grim as the Centre reacted with sternness to her protest that demanded action against former WFI President and sexual assault accused Brij Bhushan Singh.

The Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of the deaths of three UPSC students in the illegal basement library of Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Delhi. The Coaching Federation of India had challenged a Delhi High Court order on the proliferation of coaching centres in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi.
Court highlights:
We are all faced with a wake-up call after recent unfortunate incidents that resulted in the loss of life of some young individuals who had joined coaching centers to pursue their careers.
Therefore, we deem it appropriate to broaden the scope of these proceedings suo motu to enquire into what safety norms have been prescribed so far by the Union of India (through the Ministry of Urban Affairs) and the NCT of Delhi, and if so, what effective mechanism has been instituted to ensure compliance with them.
These places have become death chambers…You want us to set aside this simple order (of the HC)? You are taking away the lives of young ones coming from different parts of the country… This is a frivolous plea.”
Court Orders:
All coaching institutes must comply with the fire and safety laws under the the fire and safety requirements under the Delhi Master Plan 2021, read with Unified Building Bye Laws of Delhi 2016.
In addition, the Court ruled that institutes can operate online until safety norms are fully met and students have a dignified life.
