This channel covers the engagement activities of the Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Centre (GMMDC) at the Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth.
The GMMDC (the Centre) is a self-funded engagement centre in the Science Faculty at the Nelson Mandela University. It was established in 2002 in order specifically to find ways to improve teaching and learning of maths and science in South African schools. Modern technology – especially mobile telephony and interactive computing - is being harnessed to create off-line curriculum-based teaching and learning methods. This approach – dubbed the Techno-Blended Model (TBM) – combines ICT technology, show-and-tell videos and presentations, motivational activities, support services, integrated and inter-active teaching methods, and organised workshops, Saturday classes and the use of teaching volunteers to make studying of maths and science more self-directed.
