During my early years as a guitarist, I hit a frustrating plateau when it came to lead playing—particularly when trying to understand the difference between the major and minor pentatonic scales.

Like many guitarists, I was told the easy fix was to simply shift my minor pentatonic scale patterns down three frets to play in the major pentatonic…

I see many guitarists following this same advice (and honestly, I think it sucks...).

So let me explain why I don’t believe this to be helpful advice and give you a more effective way to think about these two scales.

The minor pentatonic and major pentatonic are two independent scales that need to be understood and practiced separately.

While the advice to “shift down three frets” might technically work, it can leave you stuck in a mindset that makes soloing with the major pentatonic scale far more confusing than it needs to be.

Trust me, you’d feel a lot more confident soloing with these scales if you just took the time to learn the individual positions, root notes, and theory behind both of them.

When you understand that the pentatonic scales are five-note skeletons of larger 7-note scales, you can begin to open up so much more potential in your lead playing.

The major pentatonic (five notes) is derived from the major scale (seven notes), and the minor pentatonic (five notes) from the natural minor scale (seven notes).

These insights allow you to break free from the same repetitive patterns and start crafting solos that really stand out.

And here's the best part: you can actually use both scales in the same solo to add a bluesy flair to your major solos.

The trick is to throw in minor pentatonic phrasing sparingly and resolve to a major sound.

Want to dive deeper into this concept? You can learn more by watching my latest YouTube lesson where I break it all down in detail. Just click the link in the comments to watch it.

P.S. - In case you haven't heard already, last month I launched a free intermediate soloing course "Melodic Soloing With Triads" and you can get instant access right here --->> bit.ly/47oWab8

🚀 FINALLY!

🎸 My long awaited online course, Bulletproof Guitar Player 2.0 Volume 1, drops on Friday the 24th of November! 📅

📈 This course was designed for frustrated guitarists who have been stuck at the same level for 10, 20 or 30+ years and are ready to leave their intermediate rut in the dust and break through to an advanced level!

If you’re tired of wasting money on ‘shortcut methods’ that promise the world and fail to deliver, THIS is the anti-BS curriculum for guitar that you’ve been longing for.

❌ No lofty promises of ‘X result within Y weeks’.

❌ No ‘music theory isn’t necessary’ bullsh*t (taught to you by players who know and use theory…)

⏳And no more wasted time…

Only a step-by-step learning path that will:

✅ Challenge you and force you to go outside of your comfort zone

✅ Give you the mastery of the fretboard that you always wanted to have

✅ Show you how music theory actually makes you a more creative guitarist

✅ Shatter the limiting beliefs that you’ve held onto for years about your lack of progress

🤔 How does it accomplish the above?

The powerful combination of music theory fundamentals and fretboard visualisation practice routines that when put into practice consistently, give you a control over the guitar that is bulletproof.

It’s like having 20/20 vision after having only ever previously seen the fretboard as a blurry mess of notes.

📧 Sign up to my mailing list today and we’ll notify you as soon as the course goes on sale (you won’t want to miss the HUGE Black Friday launch discount for the first two weeks only…)

Ok, it’s time to reveal the secret I’ve been talking about the last few days!

If you enjoy playing blues and improvising over backing tracks, then you’ll like this…

…and if you’ve ever watched Robben Ford, Matt Schofield, or Joe Bonamassa and wished you could make your guitar sing like they do, then check this out:

This Sunday the 16th I’m releasing a **completely free** online Blues Improvisation Masterclass that will show you exactly how to move beyond the minor pentatonic “prison” and completely transform your improv and solos.

You’ll learn:

✅ Why the 12 bar blues progression calls for more than just the minor pentatonic and blues scales … (AND more than triads/arpeggios)

✅ How to highlight the I, IV, and V chord changes perfectly and always hit the right notes at the right times for captivating solos

✅ How to target the chord tones of the three chords to play super tasty licks

✅ How to stand out from 99% of other blues guitarists

✅ And best of all, you’ll get excited about learning and playing the blues again, just like you were when you first learned the minor pentatonic

Moving beyond the basic blues scales, arpeggios, and triads - and instead learning to build your improv around the chord changes - will quickly turn you into a sophisticated blues improviser…

🎸And this is exactly what you’ll learn this Sunday.

So if you want to check out this FREE online masterclass, click the link below to sign up!
