Where the levees end, the fun begins. Hi I’m Jared Serignè. I live in Southern Louisiana and I want to take you Outside the Levees.
Levees are big walls made of dirt and concrete that help keep water from flooding the land where people live and work.
Beyond those levees is one of the world’s greatest wetlands. The wetlands in Louisiana are like a giant playground filled with adventure! They are swamps, marshes, and bayous full of plants, animals, and winding waterways.
These wetlands are also connected to Louisiana’s culture. They are home to unique traditions, like fishing and hunting, that have been passed down for generations.
Many people make delicious dishes from the fish and seafood they catch, like gumbo and jambalaya. The wetlands reflect the lives of the people who live here, celebrating our history and connecting us to nature.
Please join me as I tell the stories that can only come from the magical places Outside the Levees.
