About

The 1990s saw significant change to the NSW railway.

The NSW state government progressively implemented the July 1989 Booz Hamilton recommendations to reorganise the then State Rail Authority into the business units of CountryLink, CityRail, Freight Rail and Rail Estate. During this time, technological advances in rolling stock, motive power and infrastructure delivered cost and operational efficiencies with lobby groups calling for the deregulation of the rail industry.

Deregulation occurred in 1996 with the steady introduction of private operators into the rail freight market, supported by competitive tendering of rail infrastructure and rolling stock maintenance.

In this series of home videos I share my memories of a definitive time of change within the NSW railways.

From time to time i will continue to upload East Hills rail fan Bert Scales series of movie films from the 1970s and 1980s.
