What a day on the Camino! 🌄 Today’s 21km hike from Ferreira to Melide was full of surprises! I started the morning with a cozy breakfast of toast and some amazing home-brewed coffee ☕️ before heading out into the peaceful countryside. But the real adventure began when I accidentally wandered off the trail! 😅

Thank God for a kind Spanish couple who pointed me in the right direction – no words needed, just a simple X gesture to show I was off track. Sometimes life is like that. We get a little lost, but there’s always a way back if we listen.

Later, I had my first Camino cow encounter 🐄 on a narrow path! My only option was to climb a thorny slope to avoid them (a few scratches were worth it). Just another reminder that when obstacles show up, staying calm and trusting the process is key. 🙏

The hike was tough with steep ascents, but the stunning views made it all worthwhile! I even stopped at a local eatery for a delicious Spanish omelette and café latte to fuel up for the final stretch. 🍳☕️

Now I’m in Melide, ready to rest and try their famous octopus tomorrow 🐙. Who’s been following my Camino journey? Drop me a comment below if you’ve got any questions about the Camino or if you’ve ever been on a hike that threw some surprises your way!

Buen Camino, everyone! ❤️

🌞 A Perfect Day in Madrid 🌞

Started the day with a hearty breakfast in the hostel —nothing too fancy, but the service made it feel like home. ☕️✨ Took some time to clear work before heading out, because hey, balance is key! 💻☑️

🚴‍♂️ The highlight? An amazing bike tour around the streets of Madrid with @Trixi.com! 😍 Shoutout to our wonderful guide, Mratt—he made the city come alive with his passion and ensured we were all safe. 🙌 And meeting Linda from the USA, a fellow educator, was such a pleasant surprise. 🌍📚 It’s moments like these that make travel more than just sightseeing—it’s the people you connect with. 💫

Lunch was at the iconic Lucio (thanks, Ana from the SIA Barcelona Office for the recommendation! 🙏) I devoured the Oxtail Stew, paired perfectly with a Mahon beer. 🍲🍺 Seriously, it was a culinary masterpiece! 😋

Spent the afternoon soaking up Madrid’s history with the Hop On & Off bus tour (Orange Route)—an easy and fun way to get a deeper look at the city’s charm. 🚌🌆 Ended the day with some shopping around Gran Via / Sol area before indulging in the BEST churros at San Gines! 🍫❤️

Wrapped up the evening with some packing and journaling. This trip has been nothing short of magical. ✨ Goodnight, Madrid. 🌙💤

[Pedrouzo Rua to Santiago de Compostela]

My final day on the Camino Primitivo. I started my walk at 9 a.m., with a mix of excitement and a bit of sadness. Today, I chose to slow down, letting each step be a quiet farewell to the path that’s shaped me.

I met Susan from the UK early on. High-energy and full of life, she reminded me why we walk… for the connections and the stories we share. Later, I crossed paths with Mr. Chen and Ms. Tay from Fuzhou, China. Speaking Mandarin again felt like finding a small piece of home in the middle of the trail.

Reaching Santiago, I couldn’t hold back my emotions. And there, I ran into William and his wife again—familiar faces at the finish line. We hugged, shared a quiet ‘thank you,’ and stood together in front of the Cathedral, soaking in the moment.

In the small chapel after collecting my certificate, I reflected on it all. This journey, every step, every encounter—it’s been surreal. All I can say is… God is so good.

As I say my last ‘Buen Camino,’ I’m filled with gratitude for every person I met along the way. Thank you for being part of my Camino story.

Buen Camino. Until we meet again.

[Arzua to Pedrouzo Rua]

Set out at 9am for Pedrouzo Rua. It started with a drizzle, but this time, I was ready—rain jacket on, heart open.

After the rain, I saw a beautiful rainbow. Life's storms always lead to something brighter if you hold on.

I met William, a retired CFO from Holland. We walked together for 5km, sharing stories about life and finding meaning in the journey.

Got a little too excited taking videos in Pedrouzo and ended up off the trail. But that detour... it brought me back to the peace of the forest. Sometimes, the unexpected is just what you need.

Later, I met Donna from Canada. We shared stories about life and teaching—such a special moment on this path.

After 27km, I ended the day with pizza. Simple joys after a long walk.

Tomorrow, it’s just 16km to Santiago. This journey is flying by... part of me wishes it could slow down.

Buen Camino

[Melide to Arzua]

It was an awesome day starting out from Melide this morning at 8:45am, as I was very much rested after a day of break from walking and knowing it’s going to be a short day ahead because I just need to cover 15km before reaching Arzúa where my accommodation of the night will be at.

Most people leave earlier but I always like to leave around 9am because I love to walk when the sun is up :) yes, the sun rises at 8:20am here at the moment.

As I left Melide, I am walking with other pilgrims on the Camino Francés (French Way), following forest tracks, crossing many pretty streams and meadows, on my way to the village of Boente where I saw the Santiago church. I passed by the picturesque village of Ribadiso on my way to Arzua. As I was quite early, I stopped at a nice cafe at Ribadiso for my lunch.

They served the pilgrim’s meal at only 15€ - it comes with a drink, a starter, and a main course. Really filling!

After which, I walked for another 1.5 hours. Of which, it started pouring! Being a city hiker (and also, I dislike wearing poncho), I am so used to using umbrella! But the winds in the mountain were so strong that it’s almost hard to avoid. A few times, my umbrella was blown away. Hahaha!

Thank God! Nonetheless, managed to reach my accommodation in Arzua and had a good hot shower!

Chilled for a bit before heading out for dinner! It’s another pilgrim set dinner! Yummy!!! Loving the vibes in this small city.

Time for 22km tomorrow!!!

Buen Camino

24 Sep 2024- Taking a rest day during my Camino Primitivo journey has been a blessing, a chance to pause and reflect. I’m deeply thankful for the opportunity to connect with fellow pilgrims (Jere & Cynthia from Texas, and Ding and Dina from California! – sharing stories, laughter, and encouragement along the way. These moments remind me of the richness of human connection, even with those we’ve only just met.

Also, special thanks to grandma Maria for taking such good care of me at the Bed & Breakfast. She is fluent in English and never failed to help me with all the food and saying hi to me when she saw me walking around the premise. :)

It’s also been a day to listen to my body, giving it the care and maintenance it needs to keep going strong. After days of walking, this break feels like a much-needed reset. I treated myself to some of the delicious local cuisines, a true highlight. The famous Melide octopus was incredible—tender and flavorful, a dish that lived up to all the hype. Alongside it, I tried green peppers, perfectly roasted with a slight bite, complementing the meal beautifully. These simple yet rich flavors are an experience all their own, a reminder that nourishment is not just about refueling but also savoring the journey.

I spent part of the day catching up on my video editing too, capturing the essence of the Camino that I hope will inspire others. Do check out my YouTube Channel - Travel with Yiew, and follow for more travel videos.

With my body rested and mind renewed, I’m ready to take on the next 15km today. The road ahead calls, and I’m eager to see what new adventures and reflections it will bring. Step by step, the journey continues.

Buen Camino!
