As a proud member of the British Society of Auks, I can demonstrate many years experience of avoiding black rats, fishing nets and oil slicks.
I must admit I was ever so slightly scared by the flashing amber light in the European Red List of Birds compiled by BirdLife International and published by the European Commission in June 2015. In the latest report of 2021 our numbers are shown as still decreasing and we are vulnerable. Once a common species, our population has fallen in Europe alone by 68% over the last 50 years!
I hope the light does not turn red for us any time soon. Climate change leading to a reduction in the food around here (such as very juicy sand eels) may be our biggest problem.
