Hi Everyone! Over the summer of 2023, I will spend 10 weeks working in a secondary school in Kakamega, Kenya as a volunteer Project Worker with the charity Education Partnerships Africa. In collaboration with the school staff, students, and community I will be identifying the needs of the school and investing in improving education there.
I am volunteering for EPAfrica because I believe purposeful change is being made through its work. As a first-generation immigrant daughter from the Philippines, I realise the privileges I've gained from my education in the UK and how much I've gained not just as a student but as an individual from learning through the opportunities I've had. So this opportunity in Kenya is a way of investing in children's future and tackling the barriers to education.
In the past, EPAfrica volunteers have purchased computers, books, and lab equipment, installed electricity in classrooms, funded water projects such as rainwater collection tanks, strengthened alumni networks, and improved school organisation, amongst many other things.
More information on the impact EPAfrica has had in East Africa can be found here: epafrica.org.uk/about/our-work/
I am fundraising for the investment money which will go directly into the school, along with the associated costs of me getting there. The projects I will be involved in are focused on having sustainable impacts in the communities which outlast the 10 weeks us volunteers are there for.
The money you donate will be spent carefully and sustainably, and will make a real impact - your generosity is greatly appreciated! (Please use the 'GiftAid' option when donating if you can!) My fundraising page can be found below:
