Sarah Anahory is a Lisbon- born artist and activist working mainly in photography, drawing, film/video, text and performance.
Self-taught photographer, graduating in 1994 from the London College of Communication/ University of the Arts, she has been creating a significant body of work mainly in photography and drawing, but also in performance and film/video.
A pioneer for womens´ contemporary photography in Portugal, Anahory was the first woman photographer to create authoral work around the themes of identity/the self/self-portraiture and self-representation, to mess with the notions of public/private spheres, and to introduce contemporary portuguese female photography into the international art market.
Her work often carries humour and self-dérision as a way to effectively affirm our human condition.
