Beautiful Coltsfoot! The first sight of color in spring here! Many confuse this bright yellow flower with dandelion, but it's quite different.
Coltsfoot has traditional uses in herbal medicine, most notably for it's ability to help soothe coughs and upper respiratory ailments. Coltsfoot, similar to plants like marshmallow and mullein, contains mucilage, which helps with its soothing effects on the respiratory system.
The flowers and leaves are used in herbal medicine; this is a great herb to dry flowers and leaves for winter use. Great herb to dry and make a tea when you need that soothing effect on the respiratory system. Would be wonderful combined with herbs like mullein, marshmallow, or thyme.
*It is important to note that coltsfoot does contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which can have some toxic effects on the liver in higher amounts, and thus shouldn't be used in high quantities and only in moderation for very short periods. The decoction process is said to destroy some of these alkaloids though. Not advised with small children or in pregnancy and as with anything herbal related that I share, please do you own in depth research and due diligence when trying anything new to you!

Well apparently I had some technical issues that I hadn't noticed until someone kindly pointed it out to me today and that is that my most recent video was missing a significant portion at the end! My apologies! I'm working on uploading the intact version of the video now for those interested🥰

Welcoming a brand new year and so very excited to see where 2024 takes us!
One of the coolest highlights from 2023 for us was being a part of Small Farm Canada magazine! Made the cover with a picture of carrots from our small homestead garden and then had a follow-up in the last issue of the year where they did a spotlight on all their cover photos of the year!
Great magazine to check out with lots of great articles and info!
