Geovane Santos, an Afro Brazilian from the city of Belo Horizonte currently living in New Orleans, is a guitarist, composer, researcher, videographer, and educator. Santosâ creative work and scholarship explore the intersectionalities of race, transculturation, culture appropriation, and processes of narrative building in music.
Recipient of the 2017 ASCAP Louis Armstrong Foundation Jazz Composer Award, Santos is considered by OffBeat Magazine the best Brazilian jazz musician in the greater New Orleans Area. Holding a M.A. in Jazz Studies from UNO, and now a third year Latin American Studies PhD student at Tulane University focusing on a critical reading of Brazilian music through the lenses of History, Race, and Music Theory, Santos is also a community engaged scholar with fellowships from both the Mellon Foundation and The New Orleans Center for the Gulf South developing multimedia projects based on memory, heritage, equity, and cultural relevance.
