Hello all!

There's no video coming this week and I'm going to be taking some extra time to start work on a longer video I've wanted to do for a while. I'm also planning to do loads and loads of reading: currently I'm about halfway through Kushiel's Dart and I'm absolutely loving it. If I can gather myself once I finish it I want to post a review!

Hope you're doing well & please let me know what you're reading and if you're enjoying it!

And if you're looking for some content of mine to watch, I did post a tarot picks my TBR video where fate decides 10 books I need to read this year.

Hi all,

I hope you’re all doing well!

This year my wrap-up videos will be changing. You may have noticed I haven’t posted one since December 1stand never truly wrapped up my reading from last year. The further I get into this year the less interested I am in posting a full-length (and very long) video. With the amount of reading I’ve been doing I would just rush through titles and wouldn’t give them the proper breath they deserve. I *do* plan to post wrap-ups this year, but the frequency will be variable and that’s something I’ll go into when the first one of the year is eventually put together. For now, if you’re interested, please enjoy my stats from last year (and some reflections on them) and some words for the books I’ve finished so far this year. This is a long read and I don’t expect everyone to be interested, but for those of you who do read on, thank you very much for being here. And thank you to everyone who is a subscriber, you all mean the world to me.

First of all! With wrap-ups changing I’ve decided not to split manga from the rest of the books I read. I read far fewer manga than I was during the summer and autumn and I also feel like separating the two makes them alien to one another when I enjoy manga and novels for much the same reasons. I will be putting each video into chapters, though, so you can skip to the parts you’re interested in. By including manga to my reading, though, they will be part of my stats moving forward.

Current Reading Goals:
-       Reading diversely—I want to hit 60% or higher this year
-       Buying diversely—In order to help encourage my own diverse reading I want to make sure I’m purchasing books from diverse authors; I want to hit higher than 25% by the end of the year (though that may be an easy goal so it might end up going higher as they year progresses)
-       Giving myself permission to DNF as needed—I’ve already DNF’d a book this year and it felt good not just to put it down so early into it but also to unhaul it
-       Reading through chopping block books—more info in my unhaul video (https://youtu.be/kWHf_P7LUDc) but basically these are the books that if I don’t read them this year I’ll just be unhauling them next year
-       Reading as many monthly book box books as close to the month they arrive as possible—I’ll be focusing primarily on Illumicrate and Locked Library
-       Reading at least 1 classic every month
-       Reading at least 1 romance every month
-       Reading more Japanese lit & specifically non-Murakami Japanese lit (I’ll be reading loads of Murakami regardless)
-       Reading more anthropomorphic animal stories—I just really like these kinds of stories but nearly never seek them out
-       Reading at least four nonfiction books this year, and this can include books of essays
-       Reading and spending time with at least four poetry books this year
-       Reading at least 12 distinct black authors—so far I’ve read 2
-       Reading outside (once it’s warmer)
-       Using a reading journal—side note: are you interested in seeing my reading journal?
-       Reading AT LEAST 50% of the books I buy/receive this year by the end of the year

Current Stats:
-       Total read: 20 books + 7 manga
-       Diverse titles: 9 books = 45%
-       Books read that I have purchased/received this year: 18 = 23%
-       Five star reads: 9 = 45%
-       Classics: 3 = 15%
-       Japanese Lit: 2 = 20% (but it’s all Murakami so far)

Books I’ve So Far This Year:
-       Anne’s House of Dreams – vlog incoming!
-       Ship of Destiny – I am a Robin Hobb stan but some of the things in the end of the book nearly ruined the series for me. Would be to spoilery to share here but if you’ve read it you know what I’m talking about.
-       Hear the Wind Sing
-       Something Fabulous – Alexis Hall is maybe my favorite romance author
-       Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries – a New Favorite Book
-       Song of Silver, Flame Like Night
-       The Gilded Ones
-       Bear and the Nightingale – vlog-ish type video coming
-       A Psalm for the Wild Built
-       Girls of Paper and Fire – can’t wait to continue on with this series
-       Half a Soul – vlog-ish type video coming
-       South Riding – lowest rated book of the year so far & very depressing
-       Juniper and Thorn – read this when I was hungry and that was a major mistake
-       Fool’s Errand – Robin Hobb more than redeems herself this book was everything to me and easily a new favorite
-       Someone to Love – DNF
-       A Prayer for the Crown-Shy
-       Pinball, 1973 – of the Murakami I’ve read this year this is my favorite so far
-       The Unbroken
-       The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi – review should be landing later today
-       Jane and Prudence – looking forward to reading more from this author

Stats for Last Year:
-       Total books read last year (including manga): 123 books
-       Total diverse books read last year (including manga as diverse): 69 (nice) = 56% -- WOOOHOOO better than I thought so I’m pleased! Still lots of work to do because I’d love in the next couple years to be reading about 75%-80% diversely (if not more) but this is a great place to start I think
-       Total books purchased and received last year: 551 – absolutely gagged over that number and I really need to cut back on purchasing. I have no space and at this point it’s feeling more like an addiction than a pleasure.
-       Total number of those purchased books I read last year OR had purchased as special editions of books I had read previously (so not counting I read them this year): 130 – 24%
-       Total diverse books purchased: 174 = 32%
-       Total manga purchased: 36 (7%)

Manga I’ve Read So Far This Year:
-       Chainsaw Man vols. 2 & 3 – five stars all around this series is brutal and I’m loving it
-       Sweat and Soap vol. 11 – I did it! I finished this series! Please celebrate with me because this is a big day for me. I loved the ending it was pitch-perfect and I think this will be a great series to return to.
-       Noragami vols. 8 & 9 – rereads, still loving them
-       Frieren Beyond Journey’s End vol. 7 – still loving this
-       Hanako-kun vol. 17 – better than the last volume! But still not as good as it was at the start

Exciting Upcoming Releases:
-       One For My Enemy by Olivie Blake
-       Untethered Sky by Fonda Lee – side note, I always want to write Jane Fonda whenever I try to write Fonda Lee
-       Something Spectacular by Alexis Hall
-       Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh
-       The Water Outlaws by SL Huang
-       The Witch King by Martha Wells

Books I Hope To Get to Soon:
-       The Foxglove King
-       Godkiller
-       Tress of the Emerald Sea – I preordered the Dragonsteel edition and the UK edition because why is the US cover is so ugly
-       Warbreaker – yes, I’m in a Sanderson mood
-       All Systems Red – it would be a reread but I miss murderbot
-       Snow Country
-       Spy Family vol. 9

Wow thank you so much for reading if you’ve gotten this far! What are you currently reading? I’m about halfway through Chain of Thorns and this book is such a comfort to me. It will be a long wait for Wicked Powers to begin publishing (though I’m more than willing to wait). Please have a great rest of your day.

Hi all,

Hope you're having a wonderful season. I just wanted to say thank you for supporting me this year. I've been dealing with some unexpected health problems over the last week and I need to prioritize my health right now. The channel is not being shuttered, but I wanted to let you know that you shouldn't expect regular videos going up for the foreseeable future. I have a few vlogs that I'm editing, and those are much lower key videos, so those will post when I have them. I'll be back to regular posting when I can.

Thanks for sticking with me,

Hope you're reading a good book.

-Sam
