Salpem Lake Fields in Navelim, Salcete, Goa, are a key part of the region’s natural and agricultural heritage, showcasing Goa’s biodiversity. These fields, situated in the heart of Navelim, were once a thriving habitat for various plant and animal species. Migratory birds often visited, while freshwater fish and nesting turtles also called this area home. Six fishing ponds formed a vital part of the local economy, with fishing and paddy cultivation sustaining the livelihoods of local farmers.
Around 50 farming families from the area are now united under the Salpem Lake Navelim Farmers Union, officially registered with the Government Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA). The fields are linked to various wards of Navelim village, including Colmorod, Ratwaddo, Sirvodem, Nagmodem, and Sinquetim. Historically, these fields have been part of the fertile basin of the Sal River, a lifeline for the region, known as an ancient “bowl of grain.”
