The Living Coast UNESCO Biosphere, previously named "Brighton & Lewes Downs Biosphere", is part of a network of 738 UNESCO designated biospheres in the world, just like the Galapagos Islands or Mount Olympus!
Since 2014, our area has been recognised internationally for its outstanding environment and excellence in sustainability by UNESCO, the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organisation. From the South Downs National Park to the vibrant towns of Brighton & Hove, Lewes, and the surroundings, down to the beautiful chalk cliffs, stretching between the rivers Adur and Ouse, we aim to connect people and nature to inspire a positive future together.
The Living Coast is also a partnership of over 40 organisations, with Brighton & Hove City Council as lead partner. It aims to foster sustainability across 3 goals: conservation of culture and nature, an economic development that is socially and environmentally friendly, and education. You can take part, check out our website!
