Since 2000, Multistakeholder Forestry Programme (MFP) has been supporting Indonesia in strengthening its forestry governance, improving forest management and reforming market that reduce the illegal use of forest resources and benefit poor people. This program is supported by UK Department for International Development (DFID).
In 30 Sept 2013, Indonesia and the European Union concluded negotiations on a Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA), a legally binding bilateral trade agreement under the EU’s Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Action Plan. This commits the Indonesian Government to implement Timber Legality Verification System (SVLK) to combat illegal logging and illegal trade of timbers and to strengthen the governance in forestry sector. On 15 Nov 2016 Indonesia began issuing FLEGT licences to verified legal timber products exported to the EU. This made Indonesia become the first country in the world to be recognized under the EU FLEGT timber trading scheme.
