The devil is in the details, as they say... Amidst all the wondrous shortcuts that modern technology allows us, it is only too often more than tempting to cut out the old time-consuming methods when pursuing the crafts of the ancients. Quality and quantity rarely join hands, and so I offer a glimpse into some of the tools and methods of those who came before us. Of those who not only valued art, but more importantly relied on such crafted items for both their food and personal protection. More than just a hobby, these things were born of need itself, and so were developed into what we would call today a "high art". Crafted items of bygone millennia often astound modern experts in their complexity and the expertise in which their creators seemed to be able to manipulate the materials used in their creation. This is where my fascination lies. The material always speaks to those who listen. What is heard when all the power tools have been silenced can truly be enlightening...
