Just Released. GETTYSBURG VOICES FROM THE FRONT, this is an immersive type of history as the first hand accounts are woven together so that they unfold in a linear way. As you watch hopefully you will discover the battle wrapping around you with all the intense emotion, fear and uncertainty on both sides. A Union victory was far from a foregone conclusion at Gettysburg and these words from two centuries ago bring you closer to that history and those times. Now travel back in time to a divided America and the gravely uncertain days of May, 1863.

Time for another Top 5. This time it's the "Top 5 Underrated Union Generals." This was a tough one as there were so many excellent choices. It was tough to narrow them down to just five. As always, however, our selections will probably stir questions, comments and consternation. (Definition of "Consternation" - 'Astonishment combined with terror.') All that emotion is what makes the Top 5 videos fun. Look for the video tomorrow or Friday.

A Civil War Soldier - Thomas W. Child. My Great Grandfather Thomas W. Child (1837-1914) mustered in to Company "E" of the 18th Massachusetts at Brockton, MA on August 24th 1861 as a private. He made sergeant on November 2nd 1862. The 18th Mass fought gallantly at Second Battle of Bull Run, Shepardstown, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and of course Gettysburg.
At Gettysburg they were part of the 5th Corps arriving on July 2nd to take a position at the base of Little Round Top where even after Chamberlain's famous charge the fight was still raging. Thomas was cited for courage at Fredericksburg for ā€œcharging the enemy batteries a second time.ā€ He mustered out on August 23, 1864 after the required three-year enlistment.(Images: Thomas Child during the war, 1913 Train Ticket to Gettysburg Reunion, Thomas (on left) with an unnamed Confederate at 1913 Reunion, Thomas Child Discharge paper from the Civil War Order 51 citing my Great-grandfather for courage at Fredericksburg). I hope you have found this interesting.

I want to extend a very warm welcome to all my new subscribers to Point of the Spear. August was off the charts and I was grateful to see all the new viewers and all the thoughtful comments, even the few negative ones as it helps the channel improve. I have been a military history buff (nerd) for decades and have produced television documentaries on the subject. But the Civil War is in my DNA. My Great-grandfather Thomas W. Child served as a sergeant in the 18th Massachusetts in Company E (pictured) He was recognized for gallantry at the Battle of Fredericksburg and fought at Gettysburg. I will have a post on him later today with more pictures. Thomas even made the big Gettysburg reunion in 1913! But I just wanted to take a moment to thank you and welcome you. Many have said, "keep 'em coming," and I will. All my best, Rob.
