A variety of gemstones is being mined in Pakistan. The main gemstones include emerald, apatite, sapphire, agate, tourmaline, ruby, topaz, turquoise, lapis lazuli, quartz, garnet, and peridot.
Where are gems formed?
Most gemstones form in the Earth's crust, approximately 3 to 25 miles beneath the Earth's surface. Two gemstones, diamonds, and peridot are found much deeper in the Earth.
Shigar Valley, located north of Skardu, is one of the most famous valleys of the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan as it is the
gateway for most of the expeditions to the K-2, the second-highest peak of the world. The aquamarine was mined mostly from the Gilgit-Baltistan region, including the Shigar Valley.
