I definitely agree that the show is super fascinating to talk about and examine. I’ve noticed over the years that the show has become pretty divisive not just because of the humor but actual residents of Portland despising the show for its portrayal of the city. The show is definitely not for everyone and even as a pretty big fan I’ll admit that not every joke lands for me, but in my opinion that’s okay for me. Even though Portlandia is a comedy, it’s not really the reason I love the show and it’s something I feel like not many people talk about. Portlandia to me is a show I get lots of comfort from but from a more broad sense: it’s downtown/city aesthetic. I’ve never been to Portland before in my life, however I’ve grown up in Texas and have lots of fond memories of traveling downtown to San Antonio and going to places like the Rivercenter, the Pearl, or even just walking around to wherever and grabbing brunch on a Sunday afternoon. I’m aware San Antonio and Portland are different places, but Portlandia’s way of engrossing itself in it’s downtown setting in the show just makes it feels very nostalgic and calming to me. I come to this show not just to laugh at Peter’s pasta diet or Cat Nap, but because its a show I can simply vibe with. The best way I can describe this feeling is through that perfect intro theme. You see all these beautiful sights of the city as a calm indie song plays, and you just feel very comfortable. Again the show is not for everyone and if you dislike the show for the political commentary or because the surreal absurdist humor isn’t for you, that’s okay. If the show clicks with you though, it’s definitely something special.
